About

The Spinney is a labour of love. Owners Ben Peterson and Emilee Irwin moved from Canada to Kenya in 2016. Two kids later, they decided it was time to put down roots in Kenya. Unexpectedly, they stumbled across the perfect piece of land, on a perfect bend in the Mara River, and had no choice but to go all in.

The Spinney is first and foremost a family safari getaway for Ben, Emilee and their kids (and has the hand-prints and colouring-stains to prove it). But they can’t use it all the time. So why be selfish?! Ben and Emilee are thrilled to open up The Spinney to others that want to enjoy the magic and wonders of safari, on their own terms.

Traditional safari camps have endless charms and are a great option, but not always a perfect fit for families or groups that want to run their own schedule. The Spinney can fit up to six adults and six children, and is rented on an ‘exclusive use’ basis - meaning only one group at a time. That way you have your own safari car & guide, your own private chef and all the privacy you need. Staying with us allows you and your family to safari exactly the way that suits you. Do what you want, when you want, how you want.

The Spinney is located in Naretoi, a 1000 acre privately owned safari estate that is part of the Mara ecosystem. A significant portion of the cost of your stay is sent directly to local conservation efforts. By staying with us, you’ll be contributing to the protection of land and wildlife in this most special corner of the world.

Warning: you might end up getting safari-fever and buying a house in the Mara too (eek)!
